History and Evolution of Social Work

To understand where the social work profession is today, we must understand where it came from. Social work did not emerge overnight; it evolved over centuries as societies sought better ways to respond to poverty, illness, inequality, disability, disasters, and other social problems.

This course traces the history of social work from informal systems of care in ancient societies to the emergence of modern professional social work. Particular attention is given to Africa and Nigeria, where indigenous helping systems continue to influence contemporary practice.

Understanding the profession's history helps learners appreciate its values, identity, and future direction.
